It is good Netiquette to rate books. Do give books you've read star ratings.
Networks provide a rating system for books and stories. They are generally star rated. The more the better the rating. Five stars is usually a work can earn.
The more ratings texts have the more trusted they are. Websites generally allow users to see the average rating from users. Specific ratings may be shown in reviews.
Ratings determine how a work is viewed culturally. If a book has a high rating those interested will think highly of it and expect good quality. The individual reader makes up their own mind. Ratings are usually a good guide. Without ratings readers are left guessing.
Rate works because they encourage us to engage good writing.
