It is good Netiquette to refrain from trusting online associates. Don't trust people online.
The internet is digital. It is not physical, real. This makes it unreasonable to trust another user with anything real. Contacts can be made with a track record, brand, license, or account. The saying, “don’t trust people as far as you can see them” has real meaning. Given you cannot physically encounter a person online, you cannot throw them or trust them.
There are many ways to circumvent traditional scam detection senses of users on the internet. There are a lot of outright lies and sad stories that scam artists use, including stealing email addresses and asking friends and relatives for money. Verify everything in reality.
Do not trust online associates because a digital relationship is not real.
