It is good Netiquette to refrain from making assumptions. Don't assume anything.
An assumption is an inference not supported by fact. It is easy to infer things based on past experiences, common knowledge, and general standards.
Many people post misleading information on purpose. The information may be accurate but lead the reader to make what they consider obvious assumptions. Users create a positive online image. This leads people to make themselves look as good as possible. Reality is often different than cyberspace for heavy internet users.
No assumptions because positive online images may create misleading inferences.
