High Definition video uses a lot of data. According to Netflix their service uses about 1GB of data per hour. It may vary with other servies. High Definition uses about 3GB per hour on this service. In general HD uses three times as much data as standard definition streams.

Mobile devices have limited memory, bandwidth, and data available. The amount of free memory on a device plays a role as well. Streaming in HD can be a slow and choppy experience for a number of reasons. There are several variables that may affect picture and sound quality.
