It is proper Netiquette to carry it in a sleeve. Do protect it.
There are many backpacks with built in laptop sleeves. Brief cases come with them too. Sleeves can be purchased separately. A sleeve is a thin layer of padding that cushions devices from small impact. Using them can increase the product life cycle of the computer.
Sleeves protect computers from the contents in the bag they are carried. They protect them from the bumps and bruises of setting a bag down and picking it up. They keep them clean.
Carry in a sleeve because things inside bags bump, scratch, and get it dirty.
