Digital deception is a hoax. The internet makes it easier to trick people than in real life. Pictures can be photoshoped.

Stories can be written. Traditional methods of detecting deception are not available. There is no way to look an email in the eye.


Rules

Hoax netiquette rules keep us from being tricked. They center around first contact. People who purpotrate hoaxes have to make contact. Email is the most common form.

Almost any unconventional behavior is a warning sign. Lack of a picture. No about section on a website. A person who claims to be in business that follows lots of people.

The reasons for deception vary. Common reasons to watch out for are scams, fame, and fun. By definition people may think it is fun to trick people.

Most of the time it is scam to steal money. There have been high profile examples of people doing it for fame.


Hoax

An internet hoax is a trick for fun or crimminal intent. Criminal intent is a scam or malice. Malice is a hate crime.

The deception is carried out online. Pictures, text, video, and audio may be used. They are often altered.
