Do Not Talk and Drive



Rule Number One

Do not drive while digitally distracted because it increases your chances of being in an accident. Digital distraction is doing two things at once one of which is a digital activity. Driving while dristracted is driving a vehicle while distracted by another activity.

Rule Explation

Talking on a mobile phone or smartphone is digitally distracting because it impairs your ability to react to road conditions and hear sounds outside your vehicle. It slows you down.

Using a hands free device to talk and drive is bad netiquette because it is still distracting.

When you are listening to someone talk, you are not listening for the sounds of the road. This decreases reaction time and increases your chances of having an accident.

Driving while texting is the worst form of digital distraction while driving because it takes your eyes off the road.

Taking your eyes off the road can be worse than drunk driving because you are not looking at all.

Issue: Whether or not driving while distracted causes accidents?

Rule: Do not drive while digitally distracted.

Application: Driving while distracted is a known factor in many accidents, specifically, digital distraction.

Conclusion: It is bad netiquette to drive while digitally distracted because digital distraction causes accidents and netiquette is the social code of digital devices.

Issue: What if you get an important call you have to take?

Rule: Do not drive while talking on a cell phone because it's digitally distracting.

Application: If you get an important call or text while you are driving, pull over to the side of the road to use your electronic device.

Conclusion: It is better to be safe than sorry. Do not drive while talking on a mobile phone.

Issue: I talk and drive all the time and I have never been in accident?

Rule: Talking and driving increases your chances of an accident it does not mean that you will have one.

Application: There are many studies that show talking and driving contributes to your risk of having an accident.

Conclusion: if you are doing it, you are putting yourself, other passengers in your car, and everyone else on the road with you at risk. There are riskier things you can do when driving that may contribute to an accident. However, there are so many mobile phones and other devices that it contributes to more accidents than riskier actions.
