No Late Email

Do Not Send Email Late

Rule Number Eight

Do not send email late at night because it may call your life style into question.

Rule Explation

Have you ever wondered what someone was doing when they sent an email? That is questioning someone's life style.

Sending email late at night can call your life style into question because normal people sleep at night.

Wondering what someone was doing up so late when they sent an email can lead a person down a slippery slope of unreasonable conclusions where everything about a person's life style is questioned.

I know that sending email late at night calls a life style into question because I have done it.

It usually happens when someone you hold in high regard or seems completely professional sends an email at a questionable hour. The recipient knows what time an email was sent because it is date and time stamped in the email and on the recipient's server.

The hours of 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM are generally considered sleeping hours. Therefore, email sent during this time may call your life style into question. Do not send email between the hours of 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM local time.

I know that it's not fair to question someone's life style just because they sent an email late at night, but it happens.

There are legitimate explanations for why an email is time stamped late at night. It could be something as simple as the clock on their computer is wrong.

Issue: Whether anyone cares what time you send a message?

Rule: Do not send email late at night.

Application: Email is date and time stamped when sent and recieved.

Conclusion: Sending email late at night may lead the recipient to question why it was sent at that time. It is bad netiquette to send email late at night because the recipient may wonder without asking why you were awake so late at night.

Issue: Who cares if I send email late at night?

Rule: Your lifestyle may be questioned by someone if you send them email late at night because good people are generally in bed by 12:00 AM.

Application: Once questioned, you may never be trusted again. A potential or current employer may question your work ethic if you stay up late at night.

The time and date stamp in an email is not always accurate for various reasons. Make sure your system clock is set correctly. If you are using an online email application check your account settings to make sure it has the correct time zone and date.

Conclusion: Sending email during a reasonable time and making sure your system and email application clock are set correctly is the best way to protect your online image and personal life style from being questioned, unreasonably.

Everyone could use a little netiquette!
